Named after

يَحْيَىٰ

If your name is Yahya

No one had this name before. Allah chose it.

Quran 19:7

If your name is Yahya, your name was chosen by Allah Himself.

Zakariya was an old man, and his wife had never been able to have children. He called on his Lord quietly: "My Lord, my bones have grown weak, and my head is white with grey. And I have never been disappointed in calling on You." (Quran 19:3–5)

The angels called to him while he stood praying (Quran 3:39), and the answer was this:

"O Zakariya, We give you good news of a boy whose name is Yahya. We have not given that name to anyone before." (Quran 19:7)

Yahya means "he lives." It was a new name, given by Allah to a child who was the answer to an old man's quiet prayer.
