If your name is Bilal, here's who you're named after.
When the Muslims first arrived in Medina, there was no adhan. They gathered for prayer and guessed when it was time. Some said: use a bell, like the Christians. Others said: a horn, like the Jews. Umar was the first to suggest sending a man to call people to the prayer.
And the Prophet ﷺ said: "Bilal, stand up and call to the prayer." (Sahih al-Bukhari 604)
Bilal had been enslaved. Abu Bakr freed him. And Umar ibn al-Khattab used to say: "Abu Bakr is our master, and he freed our master." He meant Bilal. (Sahih al-Bukhari 3754)
A man who was once owned, called "our master" by Umar. And the first voice the Prophet ﷺ chose to call Muslims to prayer.
